Abilities for a Technological World: Applying the Design Process
practice
Apply: 3D Home Design

Problem: You and your family are moving to a new house. Your parents have purchased a plot of land and you are going to be using the Technology Design Model (TDM) to design and construct a 3D Model of what your new home will look like including the surrounding trees, shrubs, swimming pool, and walkways.

home design

The plot area is trapezoid shaped:
- Rear property line is 100 ft
- Front property line is 120 ft
- Left property line is perpendicular to rear properly line when viewed from the front
- Right property line is at an angle to the rear property line.

Use a cardboard base for your model.

If you need help remembering the parts of the TDM click here doc (Word doc) or here rtf (rtf).

Criteria and Constraints:

  • Plot area is trapezoid shaped.
  • Rear property line is 100 ft.
  • Front property line is 120 ft.
  • Left property line is 200 ft.
  • Left property line is perpendicular to rear properly line when viewed from the front.
  • The right property line is at an angle to the rear property line.
  • The house must not be any closer than 30 ft. from any property line.
  • You should create a swimming pool that is a minimum of 450 sq. ft.
  • You may draw on the cardboard base or use paper "models" that are colored.
  • You must label your model with the scale you used for the design (i.e. 1" = 10 ft).

Background Information: The "American Dream" is to own your own home. Visit http://www.realtor.com. Search for houses in your zip code. Then go to one of the mortgage calculators to see how much it costs to buy a house in your area. Take about 10 - 15 minutes to explore what is needed for purchasing a house and whether or not it may be better to rent or buy as a young person in their late teens to early twenties.

Materials

  • A foam block for creating a 3D model of the house and other buildings
  • Sturdy cardboard for use as a base
  • Paper or colored paper for depicting swimming pool and walkway(s)
  • Colored pens or pencils
  • Glue

Presentation: Complete the design folio using either of the two templates below:

Special Note: Your design sketches should show at least three different plot layouts for your homestead. You will need to defend you choice for the homestead in the Evaluation section by describing why the qualities of the design you chose is superior to the other designs. This is somewhat subjective but can be supported with details from the model.

Evaluation: After you complete this project, you will complete the rubric that is included in the Design Folio Template. Then upload your completed Design Folio to the 3D Homestead Drop box.
