: Attributes of Design

Design is the foundational problem-solving process of technological development. Design is to technology, what inquiry is to science. Technological development is problem solving. Design is a type of problem solving. Not all technological problems are solved through design. Other technological problem solving processes to be explored throughout the course include experimentation, troubleshooting, research and development, invention and innovation. These presentations present the basic attributes of design, followed by a more in-depth presentation on the design process, a process you will use throughout the course.

Attributes of Design:

Design is a deliberate process for solving problems and satisfying wants or needs. Unlike some other processes, the design process is not always a sequential process, and although it has a definite beginning, it has no definite end, as technologies are always in a continuous improvement process. This presentation provides the foundational concepts related to design and the process of design.

The Design Process:

The design process is central to technological development, and will be applied in the activities you will engage in, throughout the course. This presentation focuses on the design process applied to technology.
