Apply the Design Process


You've had a chance to apply your problem solving skills and to apply concepts throughout this course. In many cases, you moved through the technological design process as you applied the concepts. In this activity, you will "formally" apply the Technological Design Process.

Problem: You are going to be using the Technology Design Model (TDM) to design and construct a boat that will float in a large pan of water and hold as many pennies as possible.

Criteria and Constraints:

  • Use a sheet of 12" x 12" aluminum foil
  • Float your boat in at least 4 inches of water.
  • Your boat must float for at least 30 seconds without sinking.

Background Information: For some information about how boats float, read this article from How Stuff Works boat(http://science.howstuffworks.com/question254.htm).

Materials:

  • A 12" x 12" piece of aluminum foil
  • A Large Pan of water (at least 4 inches deep)
  • A large supply of pennies

Presentation: Complete the design folio using either of the two templates below:

  • Design Folio in doc Word or rtf RTF format
  • You may choose to create your design folio using PowerPoint, if you prefer.

Assignment: After you complete this project, you will complete the rubric that is included in the Design Folio Template. Then upload your completed Design Folio to the Design Folio Boat Study drop box.
