The Designed World: Medical Technologies

Lesson Overview

Medical advances have helped humans meet their desire to live longer, but does living longer mean living better?  In this lesson, you will examine how medical advances have helped people worldwide live more productive lives by changing the focus of medical research from emergency care to managed health care.

Learning Outcomes:

Develop an understanding of and be able to select and use medical technologies. (ITEA 14)

  • Medical technologies include prevention and rehabilitation, vaccines and pharmaceuticals, medical and surgical procedures, genetic engineering, and the systems within which health is protected and maintained (ITEA 14-K)
  • Telemedicine reflects the convergence of technological advances in a number of fields, including medicine, telecommunications, virtual presence, computer engineering, informatics, artificial intelligence, robotics, materials science, and perceptual psychology (ITEA 14-L)
  • The science of biochemistry and molecular biology have made it possible to manipulate the genetic information found in living creatures (ITEA 14-M)
