The Designed World: Energy and Power Technologies

Lesson Overview

What are your energy needs and expectations? The energy that will be used in the future will be much different than what is used today.  In this lesson, we will examine energy conservation, products, and alternatives to fossil fuels.

Learning Outcomes:

Develop an understanding of and be able to select and use energy and power technologies. (ITEA 16)

  • Energy cannot be created nor destroyed; however, it can be converted from one form to another. (ITEA 16-J)
  • Energy can be grouped into major forms: thermal, radiant (ITEA 16-K)
  • It is impossible to build an engine to perform work that does not exhaust thermal energy to the surroundings (ITEA 16-L)
  • Energy resources can be renewable or non-renewable (ITEA 16-M)
  • Power systems must have a source of energy, a process, and loads (ITEA 16-N)

Getting Started

To begin this lesson, consider the current state of energy production and demand. We are at a time of transition from a world of non-renewable energy use, to a movement toward use of renewable energy resources. Complete this brief activity to check your understanding of renewable and non-renewable energy.
