practiceProblem Statement: In this project, you will participate in the process of technology transfer by applying an existing technology in a new and unintended way. Your technology transfer will demonstrate the interdependence of math, science, and engineering in technological design and transfer.

Background: The history of space exploration is also a history of technology transfer as evidenced by the many spin-offs from the space program. As a nation, our investments in the space program, have resulted in many spin-offs that have returned enormous profits and have developed new industires and inventions.

Directions (Overview)

Briefly, each student will:

  1. Define a common problem or task.
  2. Combine two or more items commonly found in your home, to solve the problem or to assist with a task.
  3. The combined items should be used together in a manner different from their intended use.
  4. Describe the transfer of technology from its intended use to a new use.

Please follow the detailed directions provided on the attached document. directions document

Criteria and Constraints:

  • The items you combine should have different intended uses. For example, plates and cups are used for food. You could use a plate, but some non-food technology as your other item.
  • Create a brief rationale statement to describe how your new device solves the problem or task.
  • The new device does not need to actually work, but can be a prototype or design model that illustrates the concept.
  • If your design does not function as intended, provide a brief description of how the device should work.
