Foundations of Technology
Technology and Society: Technology Shapes Society

Lesson Overview

Many things impact our society and way of life. Technology and society are not opposing forces. They are constantly present in every technological (manmade) event, with both of them causing a variety of impacts. In this lesson you sill see where impacts may resemble a hammer striking a nail, but you will also see where they work together to subtly change our individual lives. Will I get to drive a car that has everything I want it to have? Will technology and society determine my choices of cars and many products I need in the future? Let’s see.

Learning Outcomes:

Develop an understanding of the cultural, social, economic, and political effects of technology. (ITEA 4)

  • Changes caused by the use of technology can range from gradual to rapid and from subtle to obvious. (ITEA 4-H)
  • Making decisions about the use of technology involves weighing the trade-offs between the positive and negative effects. (ITEA 4-I)
  • Ethical considerations are important in the development, selection, and use of technologies. (ITEA 4-J)
  • The transfer of a technology from one society to another can cause cultural, social, economic and political changes affecting both societies to varying degrees. (ITEA 4-K)
