Design: Engineering Design

Lesson Overview

Have you ever considered becoming an engineer? Engineering design is a different creative process because ideas must include factors and responsibilities that are governed into the solutions they create. These factors include safety, reliability, economic considerations, quality control, environmental concerns, manufacturability, maintenance and repair, and human engineering (ergonomics). In this lesson you will see how math and science play a significant role in the designing of practical solutions.

Learning Outcomes:

Develop an understanding of engineering design. (ITEA 9)

  • Established design principles are used to evaluate existing designs, to collect data, and to guide the design process (ITEA 9-I)
  • Engineering design is influenced by personal characteristics, such as creativity, resourcefulness, and the ability to visualize and think abstractly. (ITEA 9-J)
  • A prototype is a working model used to test a design concept by making actual observations and necessary adjustments. (ITEA 9-K)
  • The process of engineering design takes into account a number of factors. (ITEA 9-L)
